Jesus' Final Week at Jerusalem Judas Iscariot |
|||
(16) Judas Contracts the Betrayal
Matthew 26:14-16 | Mark 14:10, 11 | Luke 22:3-6 | John 13:2 |
14 Then one of the Twelve—the one called
Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests 15 and asked, “What are you
willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out
for him thirty pieces of silver. 16 From then on Judas watched for an
opportunity to hand him over. |
10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve,
went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them. 11 They were
delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for
an opportunity to hand him over. |
22 Now the
Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, 2
and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some
way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. 3 Then
Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. 4 And Judas
went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and
discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. 5 They were delighted and
agreed to give him money. 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity
to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. |
2 The evening meal was in progress, and
the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to
betray Jesus. |
(20) Judas Revealed and Defects
Matthew 26:21-25 | Mark 14:17-21 | Luke 22:19-23 | John 13:21-30 |
21 And while they were eating, he said,
“Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” |
17 When
evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were
reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you
will betray me—one who is eating with me.” 19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?” 20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me. 21 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.” |
19 And he took bread, gave thanks and
broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.” 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. |
21 After he had said this, Jesus was
troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is
going to betray me.” 22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.” 25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night. |
(25) The Betrayal of Jesus
Matthew 26:47-49 | Mark 14:43-46 | Luke 22:47-48 | John 18:1-12 |
47 While he was
still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large
crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the
elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with
them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to
Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him. |
43 Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of
the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs,
sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. |
47 While he was still speaking a crowd
came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was
leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him,
“Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” |
1 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples
and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and
he and his disciples went into it. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. 3 So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. 4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?” 5 “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they said. 8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.” |
(30) The Suicide of Judas
Matthew 27:3-10 | Mark |
Acts 1:15-20 (written by Luke) |
John |
3 When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw
that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the
thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. 4 “I have
sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.” “What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.” 5 So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. 6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7 So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8 That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.” |
15 In those days Peter
stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) 16
and said, “Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the
Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide
for those who arrested Jesus. 17 He was one of our number and shared in our
ministry.” |
