1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ,

son of Adam, the son of God. [d] This and several other names in the genealogy are spelled somewhat differently in the NU-Text. Since the New King James Version uses the Old Testament spelling for persons mentioned in the New Testament, these variations, which come from the Greek, have not been footnoted. |

The genealogy in Matthew gives the lineage of Jesus from Abraham to Christ in chronological order. The geneaology in Luke gives the lineage of Jesus from God who created Adam to Christ in reverse chronological order. Matthew is silent on the lineage of Jesus from Adam to Abraham. The two sources agree on the lineage of Jesus from Abraham to David, then diverge. Only two names, Shealtiel and Zerubbabel, appear in both records after King David until Joseph husband of Mary. In Luke, the name Joseph appears in the lineage of Christ three times after King David and before Joseph the husband of Mary. According to these two sources, the lineage of Christ, in chronological order from Creation, is as follows:

1:17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations. | [In Luke, there are 42 generations after David, as opposed to the 28 mentioned in Matthew. Both are divisible by seven.]
